Two local athletes sign with Virginia Wesleyan

A couple of Frederick County athletes finalized their plans to attend NCAA Division III Virginia Wesleyan University this week.

Millbrook boys' soccer defender Jake Hansbrough signed Thursday and James Wood cross country and track & field athlete Haley Witt signed Wednesday to compete next year for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference school located in Virginia Beach.

Hansbrough has starred in the middle of a Pioneer defense that posted six shutouts in the regular season. Hansbrough also has three goals and three assists.

Hansbrough will join a Virginia Wesleyan team that went 5-12-1 (4-5-1 ODAC) last year.

In track, Witt has posted James Wood's third-best time in the 1,600 (5:40.46) and the 3,200 (12:05.58) this year. As a junior, Witt placed fourth in the Class 4 Northwestern District in the 3,200. In cross country, Witt placed 13th in the district meet with a time of 20:07.9, the third-best time on her team.

Witt will join a Marlins program that placed eighth out of 12 teams in the ODAC Cross Country Championships in the fall and a track team that placed seventh out of nine scoring teams in the ODAC outdoor meet and sixth in the ODAC indoor meet.
