Recent Wood grad Smith to play at Concord

Star Staff Report

Winchester — Recent James Wood graduate Haley Smith announced Thursday that she has committed to play basketball at Concord University this upcoming season.

Located in Athens, W.Va., Concord is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Smith chose the Division II program despite interest from several Division I schools, citing that she hopes to have an immediate impact on the court as a freshman.

Smith averaged 12.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and led the area with 3.8 blocks per game as a senior. She also lettered in volleyball, soccer and track during her time at James Wood.

Smith finished her basketball career as the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots and rebounding, and she ranks fourth in scoring. She was named the team’s defensive MVP three years in a row and also received James Wood’s John Moser award, signifying James Wood’s best female athlete for the class of 2009.

The daughter of Colonels golf and boys’ basketball coach Al Smith, Haley plans to study health and physical education.
