4A State Indoor Track Meet (Day 1)

LYNCHBURG — Handley freshman Taylor Beard won the girls’ high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 3 inches to highlight Friday’s action at the two-day Group 4A state indoor track and field meet at Liberty University’s Tolsma Track Center.

Beard led a group of four local athletes who each placed within the top six in the high jump. Sherando sophomore Donzailya Berg placed second with a mark of 5-0, James Wood sophomore Reno Rosso placed fifth with a mark of 5-0 (she needed more attempts to get to 5-0 than Berg) and Handley junior Mya Mintschenko tied for sixth with a mark of 4-10.

Also on Friday, Sherando’s Davina Lane had the third-fastest qualifying time in the 55-meter hurdles (8.58) and will be one of eight people participating in today’s finals. Action will start today at 9:30 a.m.

In the girls’ state meet, Midlothian is first with 15 points, Handley is second with 11, Sherando is tied for sixth with 8 and James Wood is tied for 13th with 4. No local boys scored Friday in a competition that is led by I.C. Norcom (19 points). Tabb and Brentsville are tied for second with 18 points.
