Mooney's win fuels James Wood wrestlers in tourney

BOONSBORO, Md. — Max Mooney captured the 120-pound weight class to lead James Wood to a fifth-place finish among 14 teams at the Battle of the Boro Tournament, which concluded on Saturday.

The Colonels totaled 222 points to finish behind C. Milton Wright (Md.) 291.5, Independence 282.5, Brunswick (Md.) 269.0 and Crofton (Md.) 223.0.

Mooney went 7-0 in his class including six pins. He pinned Independence’s Marco Maceo in 3:55 in the title match.

Other James Wood place winners: Second: Hayden Black (106), 6-1 with 6 pins; James Battulga (150) 5-1 with 2 pins, 1 technical fall; Orion Cox 5-2 (190) with 1 pin, 1 major decision. Fifth: Cash Keeler (113) 3-4 with 2 pins; Sean Hodel (144) 6-4 with 5 pins; Sixth: Hayden Franks (138) 6-4 with 1 pin, 1 major decision; Seventh: Seth Merryman (132) 4-3 with 2 pins; Aiden Henry (157) 4-4 with 2 pins.

Sherando goes 8-0 at tourneySTEPHENS CITY — Sherando knocked off all eight of its wrestling opponents at its Andrew Kenney Memorial Tournament, which concluded Saturday.

The Warriors defeated Evergreen Christian (84-0), Heritage (75-3), Amherst (81-0), Warren County (35-33), Osbourn (76-3), Chancellor (66-12), Rock Ridge (60-18( and Warhill (78-6).

Carter Straight (126), Anthony Lucchiani (138), Zachary Hayes (144), Jake Dann (165), Judson Dean (190) and Camden Sommerfeld (215) each went 8-0 during the competition.
