College wrestling: Wood grad Nuss 6th at regions

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — James Wood graduate and Wilkes University junior Christopher Nuss placed sixth at 184 pounds on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Southeast Wrestling Tournament.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the national tournament.

On Friday, the sixth-seeded Nuss had a bye in the first round and defeated Joseph Toner of Ferrum 9-4 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Nuss fell by fall in 2:24 to George Moseley of Averett. He ended his day with a fall in 5:33 over James Ellis of Lycoming in the fourth round of consolations after trailing 5-3 entering the third period.

On Saturday, Nuss defeated Vincenzo Corvetto of Roanoke 4-1 with the help of a takedown with 12 seconds left. In the consolation semifinals, Nuss lost to Rylan Mosse of Marymount University by fall. In the fifth-place match, Nuss fell by technical fall to Nicholas Hall of Delaware Valley University.

Nuss finished the season with an 18-5 overall record and his second consecutive placement at the Southeast Regional after being eighth last year at 174 pounds.

Wilkes placed eighth of 22 teams with 91.5 team points.
